Kirsty Katul BA, MA, LL.B, Acc.FM

Kirsty was born and raised in Scotland and immigrated to Canada at the age of 16.  Kirsty spent the next several years living in Toronto and received her Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and Sociology from the University of Toronto (1994), and her Master of Arts from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto (1994).  Kirsty then attended Osgoode Hall Law School and was called to the bar in 2002.

Kirsty practiced family law litigation where she represented clients on all family law matters and helped negotiate complex settlements both in and out of court. She was also trained in Collaborative Family Law and through this non-adversarial process, learned the value of thinking outside the box in negotiating settlements.

Through her experience in family law litigation, Kirsty has seen firsthand the financial and emotional burden imposed on families through the traditional legal process.

Kirsty feels strongly about the importance of providing a non-adversarial process to assist clients navigate the bumpy and uncertain road of separation.  As an Accredited Family Mediator with the Ontario Association for Family Mediation (OAFM), Kirsty assists clients resolve all matters related to their separation, including property, support and child related issues, but she does not represent either party.  In mediating family disputes, Kirsty works closely with clients to assist them in making well thought-out and informed decisions as they look towards the future.

As a Collaborative Lawyer, Kirsty is committed to the Collaborative Process as the way to help clients reach their goals by customizing a settlement that is unique to their needs and allows them ultimate control over the outcome and the decisions that are made along the way. Collaborative Law focuses on a team approach to resolving family matters, where in addition to legal counsel, clients have access to financial and family professionals to assist them in resolving their family matter. In addition, in Collaborative law clients sign an agreement that they will not go to court. Kirsty strongly believes that this, combined with the team approach where clients have direct input into the decisions affecting their own lives, allows clients to reach the best possible result for their family, while protecting their relationships and allowing them to move forward with dignity and respect.
